This Easter a new artist run shop is opening in the commercial heart of Bristol city centre. April will see the launch of Paper • Scissors • Stone, a temporary emporium showcasing the very best of local, high quality design.

After the success of the five temporary ‘pop-up’ shops open in the run-up to Christmas 2011, Made in Bristol will be hosting five ‘Volumes’ of this artist run ‘temporium.’ Each volume will feature a selection of talented makers and artisans working in Bristol. The shop will bring together all kinds of artists; from glassworkers to textile designers, chocolatiers to furniture makers. Shoppers will be able to purchase fashion accessories, homewares, illustrations, and other quality, skillfully created products directly from the people who made them.

Volume 1 of Paper • Scissors • Stone will launch with a party in the shop on the 4th of April. Come along from 5pm for an opportunity to meet the local artists behind the temporium, there'll be music, drinks (supplied by Barefoot Wine) and you'll also get the first pick of select, handmade work on display.

This Easter Made in Bristol will launch a new shop called Paper • Scissors • Stone in the cities busiest shopping destination Cabot Circus.

Open from April until Christmas 2012 this temporary emporium will be presented in 5 Volumes, each featuring a different group of selected artists.

Volume 1: April & May

Volume 2: June & July

Volume 3: August & September

Paper • Scissors • Stone will showcase up to 30 local artists per Volume.

If you are an illustrator, ceramicist, jeweller, fashion & textile artist, sculptor, printmaker, glass & metalworker, milliner, book binder or other type of quality maker producing affordable 2D & 3D products then please get in touch.

We would also welcome applications from local skincare businesses and artisan food producers creating ambient, beautifully packaged gifts.

SPZero76 aka. Keith Hopewell is a versatile freelance illustrator based in Bristol. Working steadily as a freelancer for a number of years, he has worked alongside Mambo and Free Spirit, creating wall art in their stores. He has regular work creating signs, canvases and murals for bars, clubs, hairdressers and shops around the South West, including promotional work with Red Bull. He also produces live art at festivals and club nights and was part of the winning Secret Wars team at Upfest 2011, Europe’s largest street art festival, alongside Squirl and Loch Ness. He has exhibited in many galleries and was involved in The Wow! Gorilla project for Bristol Zoo’s 175th Anniversary, working on two of the gorillas.

Masai works in humanimaltation (human-animal-mutation). Presenting ways to juxtapose humans, the so called ‘super being’ with beasts is something that allows for the viewer to become overwhelmed with identity issues and comical references.

“My images explore the identity crisis that humans have with everyday life from hierarchal status to satire parody. My mark making mediums include anything I can get my hands on; House paint, acrylics, oil, Spray-paint, brushes, fine tip pens, Indian ink, Japanese calligraphy pens. Vintage frames, found wood, general house junk, vintage leather suitcases, clothes, vintage photographs are amongst my many materials. My process includes layering, montaging, rummaging, street pasting, gallery hanging.”

Lokey was born and raised in Bristol. His passion for graffiti started in the mid 1980’s through a chance meeting in a local park, with some kid’s break-dancing who had returned from their holiday in America with hip-hop mix tapes and photographs of graffiti. He is the youngest veteran of the Bristol Graffiti Phenomenon, with over 20 years of experience in the once underground scene, which is now very much a part of the day to day lives of Bristolian people. His writing style has progressed, over the years, from simple bubble letters in the early days, through to Wildstyle and now the 3D lettering, that he is most known for, and more recently the addition of some characters to his bag of tricks. Bristol Creatives is a networking and marketing initiative for local visual and applied artists. Their special Christmas Pop-up Shop will showcase the work of its 100+ members featuring cards, original artwork, prints, photographs, jewellery and other quality gifts. The shop is the last of its kind to open in this series of Pop-Up Bristol and we caught up with Project Manager, Sally Reay, to talk everything Bristol Creatives:

Bristol Creatives became a completely independent organisation in 2011, what were the reasons behind this change and where would you like to be in another 12 months?
Bristol Creatives was originally set-up and established by a small group of Bristol-based artists and makers with pilot funding from the Arts Council England South West and support from Bristol Spaceworks (formerly BEST/Bristol East Side Traders). As from June 2011 Bristol Creatives became a totally independent artist-led network run by volunteers funded solely by subscription fees from our Gold Membership scheme. It was always the long-term aim to be totally independent as soon as our paid Gold Membership Scheme began bringing in enough revenue to support our activities.

We have two sorts of members - paid Gold Members of which there are currently over 150 and free subscribers of which there are 1800+. Paid Gold Membership has a range of benefits including opportunities to take part in group exhibitions, and the ability to use our website and monthly e-bulletins to promote your creative practice or business in our online Creative Directory and your exhibitions and workshops in our What's On Guide and attend networking events. Subscribers receive our FREE monthly e-bulletins that are full of exciting news, opportunities, jobs and the best of what's on in creative Bristol.

Who are some of the artists involved in Bristol Creatives Pop-Up Gallery and where might people have seen their work before in Bristol?
Artists taking part in the Bristol Creatives Pop-up Department Store include Lisa Malyon who recently had a solo show of her drawings in Harvey Nichols, Simon Caplan's close-up photography, Susan Taylor's beautiful typographic prints, precious metal jewellery from Hazel Sutton and Mark-Jan Dielemans and Christmas Crafts from Lazy Crafternoons to name but a few.

What are you most looking forward to about bringing Bristol Creatives to Cabot Circus as part of Pop-Up Bristol?
This is a great opportunity for artists and makers to sell in a high street/shopping centre over the peak shopping period - we're looking forward to setting up an exciting and interesting exhibition and meeting shoppers.

Is independent art and craft recession-proof?
I'm not sure about recession-proof per se, but I do believe that shoppers are beginning to see the value in buying locally made, arts and crafts as opposed to mass produced junk from China!

Born in Liverpool but now painting out of the art capital of the UK which is Bristol, Ian Phenna has always had skills with his hands. Able to migrate between different mediums is his real talent. With his love of street art from his early days, now hugely experienced he has progressed dramatically to unique style of portrait interpretation. Known mostly for his portrait and figurative work, Ian brings significant elements of his street style to his contemporary based approach to canvas work. Mark-Jan Dielemans is a Dutch goldsmith-jeweler who trained at the trade school for goldsmith in Amsterdam and the art academia of applied arts in Maastricht in the 1980s. He has been making and designing jewelry ever since. He works with and in precious and non-precious metal and use a wide variety of gem stones and other materials in his designs. Now working and living in Bristol he has undertaken many commission pieces as well as giving new live to “old” or damaged jewelry.

Andy uses his drawing skills and love of detail to create bizarrely intricate collections of creatures from rabbits made of tanks to dinosaurs mobilised by 'lots of stuff'. He was trained in the traditional techniques of animation and drawing, becoming influenced by Miyazaki and Geoff Darrow amongst others. He uses a combination of graphics, line drawing, ink and paint pen to create his beasts and is now assaulting windows and walls with his unique menagerie.

Create Festive Fair Returns

She takes commissions from clients, and also sells her own illustrated crafty goodies – under the name BearHands – through shops, craft markets and online. BearHands uses a lot of printmaking and pattern, and applies quirky, cute illustrations and text to all sorts of things like jewellery, T-shirts, bags, prints and cards. The rest of her work is fairly traditional in style, using a pencil line and bright, fresh watercolour, to bring to life her love of fairy tales, people and nature.

Interview: Anna Smithson, Smithson Gallery

Smithson Gallery is a local online art gallery that regularly participates in art shows across the city and wider afield. Smithson Gallery + Gifts Pop-Up Shop will be an exciting one-off experience incorporating the beautiful contemporary artwork that Smithson Gallery is known for in addition to showcasing a select group of guest designers. With some fabulous products for sale, including original cards, bags, cushions, tea towels, ceramics and decorations we cannot wait for their launch on Thursday! We cornered the galleries founder, Anna Smithson, to find out a little more about her and see what she was looking forward to about the event:

What inspired you to set up Smithson Gallery?
Because of my background within the design and publishing field (I was an art editor constantly commissioning and editing artists and photographers work, researching trends and dealing with large high street clients worldwide), I often had artists asking me for advise. I realised I had a lot of experience to put into a gallery and to help artists. Also having been represented by a couple of galleries myself, I was disillusioned by the care some galleries took of their artists. I always aim to communicate well and care and grow with my artists - honesty being key. Also having moved from London to Bristol I identified lots of untapped talent that I just had to expose! Having spent my whole career surrounded by imagery I couldn't imagine a better transition for me. I still get tummy flips about new images!

How does Smithson Gallery support emerging talent in the South West?
I was amazed when I moved to Bristol how much talent (including names I have been aware of for years) is in the city. I felt very inspired to support this talent and advertise myself as representing South West artists. So many people look straight to London but I think although Bristol is a very different market it is potentially as strong.

Are you an artist yourself?
Yes. I trained in printed textiles followed by a 10 year career in fine art publishing but always dabbled with my own creativity in my own time. 5 years ago I pursued my artwork further and took a studio in Wimbledon studios, followed by Mivart Studios when I moved to Bristol and now I screen print out of Spike Island. My own work has evolved to be a separate business to the gallery and I have taken it down a retail commercial route of screen printed prints and cushions. I feel being creative myself is beneficial to being a gallery owner.

What have been some of the most exciting projects Smithson Gallery has been involved in over the past 12 months?
Our very atmospheric week long exhibition at Aqua restaurant over in Bath was great. It was in a converted chapel so the evening preview event was fantastic with wonderful light, stain glass, live piano and some great guests. The artwork really 'sung' for the evening. Another highlight to the gallery’s year was participating in the Affordable Art Fairs in May. Our stand was rarely quiet and, as we are online, it is such a fantastic opportunity to be face to face with clients. We love the buzz that Bristol and its people give to such an event. Also the recognition to be accepted into the Battersea London show was a 2011 highlight, we are very proud to have taken some of Bristol's local artists and expose them to London buyers.

Who are some of the artists involved in Smithson Gallery + Gifts pop-up shop?
We’ve got loads of artists involved including Annie Little, Anna Harley, Anna Marrow, Anthony Garratt, Charlotte Farmer, Clare Cutts, Chitra Parvathy, Merchant, Emma Fellows, Fleur Deakin, Frea Buckler, Freya Cumming, Kelly Stewart, Jayson Lilley and some special guests like The Strawberry Card Company , Clare Owen, Simon Tozer and Pouss Jewellery.

How important do you feel events like Pop-Up Bristol are to local artists and culture in the city?
Very important, especially to online galleries such as myself. It keeps a buzz about the city and gives the opportunity to showcase work that might not be seen otherwise. I think the people of Bristol are very encouraging of pop-up events and who wouldn't want to see some lovely artwork in an empty shop rather than a constant reminder of tough times of a shut-up shop? The more there are, the more I hope people feel comfortable with visiting them and embracing buying and supporting local talent - of which there is tons! There are not many cities that would be as supportive as Bristol is to its creative hub and I am very proud to be a part of the pop up Bristol event.

What can people look forward to from Smithson Gallery in 2012?
Our continuous rotating shows within Harvey Nichols, Picture House East and Aqua as well as working alongside Affordable Art Fair in Bristol and London. Our aim is to participate in an abroad show very soon and you never know, you might see us 'pop up' in another shop space within Bristol very soon!

The delightful Laurie Stansfield is besotted with stories. In her big illustration bag, lies a precious award from Pan Macmillan, known as a ‘highly commended,’ for her story ‘Red and the Boy.’ Next to this, a shiny BA (hons) Illustration degree sits, which actuated her love of Bristol. In the heart of the beating city, she draws, reads and creates children’s stories with characters of all different textures. Pencils and paint are used to create her images. She likes how hand-drawn, expressive, images reveal a playful, human-touch, which nicely suits the themes of her silly, yet moralistic stories. (She knows that she’s a silly human so you won’t need to point it out.)

Having only been founded this year, Drawn in Bristol has rapidly become one of the most popular illustration collectives in the city with regular events, shows and now its own shared studio space and printing workshop too. The collective has 50 members and celebrates the work of locally-based illustrators by providing them with a platform to showcase their work. We sat down with Drawn in Bristol’s Director, Bryony Morgan, to chat about the collective and their fantastic Pop-Up Shop in Quakers Friars:

What was your motivation behind setting up Drawn in Bristol?The realisation that illustrators rarely get the recognition that other 2D artists do and I really wanted to provide the huge range of local talent based in the city with a professional platform to create and sell their work. I was also lucky enough to have been given an entire studio’s worth of screen-printing equipment on the proviso I found it a home - enter the Drawn in Bristol shared studio & workshop!

What have been some of the most exciting projects Drawn in Bristol has been involved in over the past 12 months?Our rolling exhibition at M Shed has really got our new project noticed and the atmosphere at our first big selling event as part of the Southbank Arts Trail was amazing. However the launch of our Pop-Up Shop last Friday was the most exciting moment - people were blown away with what we had achieved in 4 days with zero budget and it made all the hard work totally worthwhile.

Who are some of the artists involved in Drawn in Bristol’s Pop-Up Shop and where might people have seen their work before in Bristol?Tom Berry & Hannah Broadway have both previously taken part in the Made in Bristol events at Colston Hall. Jenny MacKendrick is part of the fab Upstairs at BS8 on Park Street. Emily Daly, Claire Shorrock, Louis Labron-Johnson, Laurie Stansfield, Ben Goodman, Kyle Smart and Martha Ford are all recent graduates who we expect great things from and it’s fantastic that they are able to have such a high profile outlet at what will be most of their first Christmas as professional illustrators. Katy Christianson has been creating music posters around Bristol for years. Sally Haysom is one of our permanent studio members and creates a wonderful range of jewellery and stationary, perfect Christmas gifts. Romina Canet is an Argentinean artist now creating in Bristol whose distinct Christmas decorations are a must have. And, like many of the above, Carys Tait has recently taken part in our first group show ‘BIG BOAT, little boat’ aboard the Grain Barge in Hotwells and has just started rapidly printing on our studio equipment in preparation for our Pop-Up Shop with some superb results.

Whose illustrations do you have hanging on your walls at home?In amongst the many Dave Bain’s (local illustrator, Drawn in Bristol studio manager & Bryony’s boyfriend) I own a selection of local artists work; Sarah Knight, Katy Christianson, Khoi, Sepr, Loch Ness, Rose Sanderson, Laura Wady & Jonathan McNaught to name a few. I love illustration and wanting to further surround myself with beautiful images was another motivation for starting the project.

What helps you get in the mood to work when you’re lacking inspiration?Honestly I rarely lack inspiration. I lack the time to achieve all that I would like and the ability to stop thinking about work sometimes. I do have a scrap book of flyers to inspire that part of the process and my cat definitely breaks up the day by eating important paperwork and hiding my stationary.

What is Live Drawing exactly and why should people come down to watch it in Drawn in Bristol’s Pop-Up Shop?Live drawing equals artists creating work live on a large scale. It has become increasingly popular at club nights and at corporate conferences and we thought it would be a great way to capture the imagination and provide theatre on the blank canvass that is our shop window. The artists involved have come up with some great seasonal designs and we have paired them up to maximise the drama of seeing the drawings evolve over a couple of hours.

What can people look forward to from Drawn in Bristol in 2012?This spring we will be launching our online shop, to accompany our shiny new website, so that our members’ fantastic artwork will be available anytime, anywhere.

Hannah is an illustrator and designer, she does quite a lot of different stuff; from producing artwork for public commissions like a 73m wide giant banner in Bristol’s Harbourside, or a mural in Southmead Maternity ward to producing publicity for theatre and bars as well as designing branding & logos. She also makes work work exhibition and sells cards and affordable print in small galleries and at markets. This year she has a series of picture books coming out, created with her actor/ writer husband about a Monkey and a Robot, who originally appeared in the ‘A-Z of the little things in life’. 4 Monkey & Robot books published by Bloomsbury and are due out throughout 2011.

Not only is it the driving force behind organising the entire Pop-Up Bristol event, Made in Bristol is also running one of the pop-up shops itself this November, selling all the best in locally created jewellery, paintings, illustrations, crafts, sculptures and photographs. Celebrating, showcasing and promoting local creativity and talent, Pop-Up Bristol is just the sort of event that Made in Bristol has been running for over three years and we caught up with the woman behind it all, Bryony Morgan:

What projects that Made in Bristol has been involved in recently have you been most excited about?
Pop-Up Bristol is a very exciting new event. With over 100 local artists taking part you really will be able to buy local on the high street this Christmas. We have a huge range of styles, disciplines and type of products available across the 5 distinct shops/galleries opening in the 6 weeks until Christmas in our 3 shop units in Cabot Circus - from urban street art to handcrafted jewellery, from ceramists to chocolatiers, from screen-printed Christmas cards to large-scale original artworks.

This year you are involved in three separate Christmas fairs simultaneously – what’s your secret?
Organisation, organisation & organisation! I also have some help with my promotion plus a forgiving and supportive partner. I used to be a nurse and managed 14+ patients care each day so really a few back-to-back Christmas events should be far less stressful. It definitely helps that nobody’s life is at stake!

What fuels people’s appetite for more personal, independently made artworks?
People love direct buying - especially arts & craft where you can see & explore things before you buy. Discovering the stories behind the work, meeting interesting and talented people, observing the obvious skill & craftsmanship, buying unique, one-off pieces - what is not to love? Also more and more I think people are beginning to realise that by buying locally and independently they are actively strengthening their local economy and ensuring that the place they live continues to be vibrant and unique.

What are you most looking forward to about bringing Made in Bristol to Cabot Circus as part of Pop-Up Bristol?
Ever since I was little I loved to play ‘shop’ and after a career in retail, it's great to know that it's the local artists that have been busily creating for months that will benefit and not a faceless board of directors. It is great to have so much visual freedom too. We have virtually no budget but it is amazing what we have been able to achieve. The most exciting thing will be opening the doors on the 9th (& 11th for Drawn in Bristol).

What locally created arts & crafts would we find in your home?
I constantly wear a necklace by Sophie Woodrow - it is one of my favourite things ever! It is a white porcelain hand with gold gilding, stunningly simple and I love it. I also own an acid yellow ceramic bird whistle necklace by Esther Hubert which I love to wear with pink as it clashes so wonderfully. I also own a ceramic owl by Hannah Turner and a beautiful mirror hand decorated with birds by Dave Bain.

What was your personal highlight of 2011 and what can people look forward to from Made in Bristol in 2012?
Getting the keys to our Pop-Up Shop in Cabot Circus. You can find us upstairs on the Glass Walk opposite the adventure golf place from Wednesday the 9th until Monday 14th. Hopefully we will be popping up all over Bristol in 2012 and also a website showcasing some of the finest local creatives is on the cards.

Interview: Stephen Hayles, POP-UPfest

Upfest, the Urban Paint Festival, is the largest festival of its kind anywhere in Europe and it takes place every June in Bristol. In the run-up to Christmas 2011 Upfest bring their popular street art, graffiti and urban illustration to Cabot Circus as part of Made in Bristol’s Pop-Up Bristol event. We sat down with Upfest’s co-founder and organiser, Stephen Hayles, to talk everything Upfest:

1) What made you want to start a new urban paint festival in 2008 and did you have any idea Upfest would grow to become the largest event of its kind in Europe?
Upfest 2008 was really just a happy accident; originally it was going to be about 15 friends having a paint jam, the sort of thing that happens across the UK every weekend. After being made redundant for the second time in eight months and with not much else to do, the two founding partners went about inviting friends and then friends of friends, blagged a venue (the Tobacco Factory) and the rest as they say is history. If anyone had said to me back in 2008 that in just three years we would be playing host to 250 artists from 17 different countries and would have created the largest event of its type in Europe, I would have fallen over laughing but it just goes to show what can be achieved when you get an awesome group of volunteers together even if there has been the odd sleepless night along the way.

2) What is it about Bristol that makes the urban art scene thrive so much here?
It's the people. It might sound cliché but whether it's the vast talent of artists Bristol has to offer, the accepting and slightly risk-taking public, the forward thinking parts of the council or just the momentum gained through some of the top street artists raising the profile of the city, Bristol is definitely the top place in the UK to see street art and has over the last decade cemented its position on the world map.

3) What are you most looking forward to about bringing Upfest to Cabot Circus as part of Pop-Up Bristol?
Reaching a wider audience. Upfest the festival is all about engaging those in art that would otherwise be sat on their Xbox or twiddling their thumbs in front of the TV - in the same way POP-UPfest will bring live drawing, a street art photography exhibition, an urban art sale and a number of other interactive events to the city centre. Maybe in some way we can make this year’s shopping experience that much more enjoyable.

4) Who are some of the artists involved in POP-UPfest and where might people have seen their work before in Bristol?
All the artists on display at POP-UPfest will have at some point painted at one of the last four Urban Paint Festivals. We are very pleased to have the likes of Andy Council who'll you know from his dinosaurs around Bristol and at the M Shed, Cheo who is known for his one-eyed bees found across the city including a Wow! Gorilla and, from slightly further afield, SPQR who painted as part of this August’s See No Evil event on Nelson Street and is also the responsible party for the spaceman with shopping bags that can be seen on the Full Moon hostel in Stokes Croft.

5) What new artists have Upfest helped launch onto the urban art scene this year?
The latest artist we have supported over the past 12-18 months is Bristol-born Khoi, at the age of 16 his illustrative work is way ahead of his years. This September he joined forces with Bristol graffiti legend Cheo at the Upfest Gallery (at Upfest HQ, 198 North Street, Bedminster) for the super successful 'Cheo & Khoi Show'. He's definitely one to watch over the next few years.

6) Whose art do you have hanging on your walls at home?
Haha - good question! I'm not sure I could list them all but recent(ish) additions to make their way onto our walls at home over the past 12 months have been Julian Kimmings, Paris, Lokey, Vermin, Ian Pheena, 45RPM, Matti, SPQR and Snik.

7) What was your personal highlight of 2011 and what can people look forward to from Upfest in 2012?
The massive Herakut painting which now adorns the side of the Tobacco Factory was definitely one of our highlights of this year’s Upfest. More personally, it was the way that the local community supported what we were doing, such as the long time owner of the local hardware store commenting that due to the number of people that came to North Street for the festival he was able to pay a few extra bills from back in June. These sorts of affects which rarely get reported give us extra motivation to continue to grow and improve the festival. 2012 will be Upfest's 5th anniversary and we are hoping for a crop of international artists to once again descend on south Bristol. With 2012 being Olympic year and the huge success of Upfest ‘11 plans are already underway to make Upfest ‘12 the World’s Largest Street Arts Festival!
