Meet the Maker Interview - Lianna Sheppard / Ocular

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
I am Lianna and I am obsessed with shapes! - This love is what inspires me when designing and in creating my 'Ocular' Jewellery, that I make from laser cut acrylic in lots of lovely bright colours and Geometric forms!

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
I think that it is great that independents have the opportunity to sell and that people can buy from independents in the heart of Cabot Circus / Bristol. It's ace.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
It's funny, as I kind of fell into jewellery after studying Fashion from college, but always making and having an interest in accessories. But I enjoy exploring what you can do with shapes and forms around the human form and exploring with scale.

Describe your studio or workspace?
I work from home so for now my studio is my bedroom! I have my desk/ work area with shelves full of books and boxes full of jewellery and findings - pretty much everything I need to design and make my pieces - minus the laser cutter - It's a dream to have my own one day!!

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
I am doing one on the first of December with Magpies and I - in the Spiegeltent on the Waterfront in Bristol which I am particularly excited about ! I am also doing one with Designers Makers at Spitalfields in London on the 15th, which should be a good un.

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
Mulled Wine and Cosy Jumpers!!!

If you could choose a fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist to collaborate with who would it be and why?
I love the aesthetic of Charlie Crowther-Smith's furniture, would love to collaborate on some kind of 3D product piece, I got really into product design whilst on my MA.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be? I'm loving the Jewellery by Tovicorrie so some of that would be rather lovely!

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
I would have to say Magic Roll, on Park street, although I think they are technically closed atm, but I hear they are coming back- so yay! And why? Well they are simply the best things in the world!

What are your plans for 2013?
I hope to keep growing the ocular brand, as it will be it's 3rd year of existence and achieve more of my goals!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
Mmm probably if I had to pick "I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday" - Generally find them pretty annoying, but at the same time you can't help but sing along!

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why? I have to some kind of optical illusion toy or puzzle in a very bright colour / colours- preferably purple - basically because that's what I'm all about!

Thank you Lianna - your coloured jewellery brightens our world!

You can find Lianna's laser cut jewellery in our Christmas shop - Paper Scissors Stone until 31st December.
