Back for Christmas, Paper Scissors Stone has also welcomed Rolfe & Wills. Meet the talented duo...

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
We’re Alice Rolfe and Chloe Wills.  We print on anything we can get our on, and upholster furniture.  We often work with clients to come up with a great design for their furniture, or create our own and sell them…

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
Paper Scissors Stone is special because it brings artists and makers together.  It has been the seed to so many other projects – it’s very inspirational.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
We are both makers, we love the processes of our disciplines, the challenges and the satisfaction of the final piece.

Describe your studio or workspace?
We have a studio space in Montpelier, which we share with a great portrait painter Susie Hampshire.  It’s large and bright with a great view, it’s full of fabrics, chairs which need TLC and staples… lots of staples…

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
PRESENTS!!!!!

Which fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist would you collaborate with and why?
When I first moved back to Bristol a year and a half ago I saw a print by Martha Ford and got that owww wow feeling.  I Love the depth, height, distance…. in her work… I met her through Paper Scissor Stone and got totally star struck! Very embarrassing… But we’ve met since and I managed to compose myself.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
Too much to decide from… Maybe a beautiful phone case by Tovicorrie, or one of Boodle Boutiques prints…

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
I love hardware shops…. I love Bishopston Hardware…

What are your plans for 2013?
Next year I’m going to go full time at Rolfe&Wills.  We’re still in the early days and we’ve had a great 9 months… So I’m going to put my all into it.  We will have new stockists, new designs and great chairs!!!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
The Slade one with the duck…?

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
Ummm something useful like a mini screwdriver which doubles as a party popper...

Thanks ladies - come to Paper Scissors Stone to discover Rolfe and Wills.

Meet the Maker - Devine Delinquents

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Meet Nicki from Devine Delinquents....

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
Hi, my name is Nikki and I am the designer/creator/ chief tea maker and bin emptier at Devine Delinquents.Devine Delinquents is a handmade independent jewellery company that was founded in May 2011. I specialise is making unique limited pieces of jewellery featuring everything from gothic pieces to high fashion items.  My work has an ongoing theme of being alternative.  I found that it was very difficult to find what I wanted on the high street without having to trawl relentlessly or paying a hell of a lot of money so what better than making your own pieces of jewellery.  Once people started seeing what I was making and wanting me to make them pieces I decided to start Devine Delinquents as an enterprise. So far it's been a lot of hard work but a lot of fun.  I've had a lot of wonderful opportunities from featuring in magazines, on blogs and even having my work shown at the Tate Modern as part of a one day exhibition in alternative culture. I don't think I've ever been happier than knowing that pictures of my work were being projected on to a huge wall of the new oil tanks whilst Damien Hirst's (a life long idol of mine) work was being displayed up stairs.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
The sense of community yet unique individuality that each artist and creative brings to the table.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
I think the ideas stage is my favourite as I can be creative as possible.  However when it comes to making things I sometimes have to come up with even more creative ideas of practicality.  I also love working alongside such amazing photographers and models that help to photograph my work and bring it to life for my website.

Describe your studio or workspace?
It's not grand my two cats often jump up and spill jump rings and glue every where. The area is filled with taxidermy, a very temperamental log burner, skulls, jars with preserved insects inside and general scraps of fabric, jewellery chains and my trusty ancient work table that my partners farther started his business on 45 years ago.  It is weather worn from being left outside for 6 months and the top is warped, I have drawn the standard lengths of necklace chains on the top of it.  The table also has a drawer that can only be opened with a knife being slid behind it! It may not be the ideal space but somehow it works.

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
Yes, the made in Bristol gift fair on the 16th of December. I am also having my own countdown to Christmas with a special offer on my facebook page every day until the 12th of December. www.facebook.com/devinedelinquents1

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
I adore traditional Christmas markets, there is something so magical about them.  Also the food! You can't beat a good traditional christmas roast with the obligitory bad cracker jokes and hats.  I'm glad this year as I am free of cooking duties meaning I can have a stress free christmas day.

If you could choose a fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist to collaborate with who would it be and why?
This is a tough one for me as I am in love with so many people's work there...... The top two would have to be Tovicorrie as their leather work is gorgeous and Jess Quinn as she is so multi talented!

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
I have my eye on one of the lovely ceramic milk cartons by Hanne Rysgaard

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
I have so many! I love creativity for obvious reasons.  Swinkys sweets at the bottom of Park Street for their delicious and inventive cupcakes.  BS8 as it is full of independents! Also anything in St Nicks market.

What are your plans for 2013?
Get bigger, get better and try harder.

What is your favourite Christmas song?
If I was going to be cool I would say Suzy Snowflake (look it up it's a good one!)
However, I'm not that cool and my absolute favourite is Mariah Carey and all I want for Christmas (is you!)
Once a few mulled wines have been consumed I can wail to it with the best of them!

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
A tape measure. Practical and hopefully of some use!

Thank you Nikki - a really interesting interview, we will look up the Suzy Snowflake!
You can find Nikki's work on sale until the 31st December at Paper Scissors Stone, Quakers Friars.

Meet the Maker - Stitched with Love UK

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Our shop looks so festive and full of beautiful decorations - why don't you treat yourself to a felt creation from Stitched with Love this Christmas.....

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
Hello, my name is Lisa and I am the designer/maker behind Stitched with Love UK. I often feel like I was born in the wrong era! I'm 24, a Bristolian born and bread and I adore the city. I don't think I'll ever move too far away. I live in a lovely little barn conversion. I'm a full time graphic designer and crafting is my hobby. I first introduced myself to crafting around 2 years ago at Christmas time, I didn't have much money (due to saving for a house deposit) to buy all of the lovely things I wanted to decorate my home so I decided to give it a go at making my own. I had lovely compliments from friends and family, whom suggested I tried them out online. I opened my Etsy shop/created a facebook page, and as they say, the rest is history. My work is inspired by my crafty and handmade interests and thrifty lifestyle.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
I love Paper Scissors Stone as it is unique. It's a wonderful collaboration project for creative Bristolians to share our work, and an amazing opportunity for local people to see what a vast array of creative talent that is here in Bristol.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
I love working with felt and hand stitching, I find it very therapeutic. I find it most rewarding when a thought pops into my head and within minutes I have drew up what I would like the final product to look like and start working out a pattern.

Describe your studio or workspace?
My workspace is either in my home. I live in a wonderful barn conversion. It has a large living space and on winter evenings you will more often than not find me stitching in front of the log burner.

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
It's tough to think of only one thing that is my favourite about Christmas. I love the good food and drink, staying warm and cosy infront of the fire but most of all I love the quality time spent with my good friends and family.

Which fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist would you collaborate with and why?
I would love a collaboration project with Jess from Yiskha Knits. I have known Jess since we both started out crafting (about a year and a half ago now). She is a lovely lady and I adore all of her creations.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
I love Emily Ketteringhams work. I own a couple of her prints and would love to add to my collection!

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
I love Bristol as a city for it's diverse eateries and independent shops. I do love popping into Tenderfoot though. They always have a diverse and exciting range of local handmade and crafty goodies.

What are your plans for 2013?
My plans for 2013 is to create new goodies to add to my range, to continuing to improve my stitching skills, and maybe even introduce a new craft - I'd love to be able to crochet!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
Tough question, perhaps Driving Home for Christmas, it always feels like it's Christmas once I've heard that one :)

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
I would have to be the little sewing kit. I believe I am much like the sewing kit. I get tool to keep close by and always handy in a crisis!

Thanks Lisa! Great interview and a sewing kit is super handy.
You can find Lisa's lovely creations until the 31st December in our Christmas shop - Paper Scissors Stone.

Today we have caught up with local enamelling legend Janine Partington to talk Christmas....

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
My name is Janine Partington. I have lived in Bristol for fourteen years. Not long after moving here I started evening classes at the Bristol School of Art (part of Filton College) in vitreous enamelling. Sadly they no longer run these courses. After about four years I got my own kiln and have been enamelling full time since 2006. Enamelling is the art of fusing metal to glass. I work almost exclusively with my own hand-cut stencil designs and a sifting tec What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special? Meet the Maker - Emma Wells

Monday, December 17, 2012

Today we have the pleasure of introducing Emma and her stunning glass work....
In addition to showcasing her talents in Paper Scissors Stone, Emma is also taking part in our Christmas Market, which kicks off today in Quakers Friars.

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
I'm Emma Wells and I design and make small works in kiln-fired glass. I am particularly inspired by the Victorians, the opulence of the era and their incredible intrigue for collecting the weird and wonderful.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
It is so unique in a world of mass-manufactured shops and products. It gives power back to the makers who are so forgotten these days.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
It is always a challenging medium and I love the ethereal quality of glass.

Describe your studio or workspace?
It is a constantly shifting space but which always includes a workbench covered in collected bits and pieces, oodles of shelving, an area for the computer (the essential distraction from what I should be getting on with!) and a comfortable seat for tea. Oh and the largest space is always reserved for my lurcher to sprawl out in!

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
Yes, I will be exhibiting at the Made in Bristol Christmas Market at Quakers Friars all week from 17th to 23rd December.

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
The great atmosphere in traditional pubs and the fact that I can spoil myself and do what I want and not feel guilty!

Which fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist would you collaborate with and why?
This is probably a tad incestuous but, I would love to collaborate with my husband and ceramicist Adam Harvey! Even though we have shared studio space for the past 11 years we have never really found time to design work together.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
I love the little felt brooch with the cat face but, I can't remember who it is by.

What are your plans for 2013?
To become completely mobile in my motorhome, taking my studio and work with me.

What is your favourite Christmas song?
The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to you) sung by Perry Como

Thank you Emma - a cracking read!

Meet the Maker - Suzanne Leather /Teddy Long Legs

Sunday, December 16, 2012

A top selling 'must have' item in the shop this Christmas is proving to be Teddy Long Leg's birdie broach. We caught up with Suzanne the creator....

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
My name is Suzanne and I'm based in the little hamlet of Dulcote just outside Wells. Teddy Long Legs is a really new venture for me so its lovely to have the support of everyone at Paper Scissors Stone at this exciting time.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
There is such a fantastic mix of work; you realise just how many talented people there are in the area.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
I trained as a Fine Art printmaker but after 15 years of teaching art I was really stuck in a rut. Taking up free-motion embroidery has allowed me to rediscover my creativity without putting myself under huge amounts of pressure. I'm now starting to print again and combine the two disciplines which is good fun.

Describe your studio or workspace?
I have a small studio at my house - it used to be my little boy's playroom but he was evicted a few months ago to make way for sewing machines and huge piles of fabric. My studio furniture is begged, borrowed and stolen but the main thing is I now have a dedicated work space. I look out through big windows at the garden and the countryside beyond and this really inspires my work.

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
I've had stall at Christmas at the Barn in Mells and at the Charity Christmas Fair at the Bishop's Palace in Wells. It's been lovely to meet other makers at the fairs and get feedback on my work from people. It's great when someone walks in wearing one of my brooches!

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
I love putting up the Christmas tree; its great getting out all the decorations and being reminded of the special times when I bought them or the people who gave them to me. I like to get a new decoration every year, this time it's an owl as my 3 year old is obsessed by them!

Which fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist would you collaborate with and why?
I'm good friends with Laura Pearcey from Boop Design and Just Make (a contemporary craft gallery here in Wells) and I'd love to experiment with printing on ceramic.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
I did steer my husband in the direction of a beautiful locket with a fox on it and then leave him in the shop on his own so who knows....

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
We have so many fantastic independent shops here in Wells it's hard to mention just one but if you're down this way get a contemporary craft hit at Just Make, pop into Sew Vintage and Millie Moon to fill up on fabric and then head to Goodfellows for coffee and patisserie to die for.

What are your plans for 2013?
I really want to print again - I love the moment when you pull back the paper and see if its worked. I'm developing new card ranges and I want to start creating my own fabrics to work with. I've also got a 'dragons den' project but if I told you about that I'd have to kill you!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
Fairytale of New York and Last Christmas - eclectic taste!

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
The joke for so many reasons!

Thank you Suzanne - such a great interview!
You can find a selection of Suzanne's work in our Christmas shop Paper Scissors Stone which is open until 31st December (except for Christmas Day & Boxing Day when we will be asleep!)

Meet the Maker - Camilla Carlow

Friday, December 14, 2012

Testicles made of apples!
Now that we have your attention please allow us to introduce the fantastical world of Camilla Carlow.
Moss kidneys and flowery lungs make up some of Camilla's stunning photographical work. A veteran Paper Scissors Stone artist she has also made some very cute felted robins and gift tags for your festive enjoyment too. We spoke to her about all things creative & Christmas.....

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
I’m a fidgety creative.  I’m from Guatemala but now work in Bristol.  I like applying my skills to different disciplines.  The series of photographs ‘Eye Heart Spleen’ represent my interest in nature and the human body.  I’m proud of the work and I’m pleased people still show an interest a year after it was first created.  Other crafty bits I make because I enjoy working with my hands, such as felt Robins.  I also really enjoy drawing, so find great pleasure in illustrating, and find it very rewarding to turn my illustrations into tangible items, like gift cards or magnets.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
Offering handmade to an audience that wouldn’t necessarily be exposed to it otherwise.  That and giving so many local artists like myself a chance to showcase their work in a prime shopping destination.  Being in the shop selling your things, seeing what works, what doesn’t, and what people respond to – that was an invaluable experience.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
Never having a dull moment.  There’s always a crafty project on the go to turn to.  I’m also involved in a lot of video and photography work.  I love playing with light, one of my favorite things is being on the set of a short film arranging lights.  Like I said before, I’m fidgety, I have lots of disciplines!

Describe your studio or workspace?
My boyfriend and me share a study, where he’s set up for editing, and I’m set up for creative mess-making.  It looks out onto the park, we call it ‘Rosa’ because the room came with an awkward rose-colored wall feature.  We’ve come to love the space!

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
I was at the Christmas Steps Artisan Market, and will be at the Colston Hall Gift Fair on the 15th-16th of December.  I love how creative Bristol is, I always find those fairs so inspiring!

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
The songs, the fairy lights, and the fact it makes people feel like celebrating.

Which fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist would you collaborate with and why?
I think it would be Jess Quinn.  Her dolls are such strong characters, they come from their own world, with their own stories.  I would love to photograph them in an actual world, like out in the woods under big trees, or make a set with lighting and everything!  That could be fun!

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
Aside from a Jess Quinn goody, it would probably have to be an illustration print by Tom Berry.

Which is your favorite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
‘@ the Well’ on Cheltenham Road is a pretty underrated café.  It’s tucked away and easy to miss, but once you’ve been inside I don’t think you’d forget it!  A lot of thought has gone into the décor, and the fact that it happens to be a launderette just adds to the atmosphere!

What are your plans for 2013?
Seeing how far I can spread my creative wings, keep challenging myself and maybe a new exhibition or two!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
The Christmas Song (Chestnunts roasting on a open fire…) I’m currently trying to learn it on the ukulele but I’m having trouble with all those jazzy chords!

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
In Guatemala we don’t really have Christmas crackers, so I didn’t grow up with them.  I would be a firecracker, since in Guatemala the whole city is awash with smoke and lights as we burn fireworks all through Christmas.

Thank you Camilla, I like the idea of firecrackers at Christmas.
Camilla's work is on sale until the 31st December at Paper Scissors Stone and you can find her & a wide range of her work at the Made in Bristol Gift Fair this weekend.

Friday, December 14, 2012

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
I’m a Scottish Designer Maker but have lived in Cheltenham, the heart of the Cotswolds, for seven years. I  upcycle textiles, paper and leather into plushies, accessories, home decor and jewellery. I have developed my plushie designs into sewing kits, so they can be made by both adults and children.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
It gives a voice to lesser known artists and provides a professional arena to promote the work.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
I like seeing a tattered old book, map or a remnant of vintage fabric and think “Now, what can I make from that” rather than throwing it away -  I love to transform things.

Describe your studio or workspace?
Compact and bijoux which is Estate Agent speak for – not enough room. Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?I’m joining up with two other arty friends, Ali Corder and Kath Cooper and we will be at the Spiegeltent in Bristol on the 1st and 8th December which I’m sure will be great fun.

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
I like the feeling of anticipation on Christmas Eve when I decorate the tree and then the huge feast the next day.

If you could choose a fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist to collaborate with who would it be and why?
Ah well – quite a few actually – I would have to put the names in a hat.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
It would probably be a limited edition piece of jewellery but don’t make me choose.

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
Too many to mention but to be honest my favourite place in Bristol is The Zoo.

What are your plans for 2013?
Big plans for next year are more exhibition work and to publish a plushie pattern book!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
Jingle Bells,Batman smells, Robin flew away ...

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
A winning lottery ticket or a false moustache, nose and glasses a la Groucho Marx, they would both raise a smile.

Thank you Eunice - your is beautiful!
You can find Eunice's creations in Paper Scissors Stone until 31st December.

Meet the Maker Interview - Laura Mirjami

Thursday, December 13, 2012

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
My name is Laura Mirjami and I am a designer/maker of whimsical animal characters mainly made from fabric and leather. I originally come from Finland and I hope that my designs are reflecting a little bit of my roots by depicting animals in a clear, simple style that captures the essence of the animal more than the physical look of it.

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
Everything is so beautifully presented with interesting work and the whole operation has such a lovely community spirit.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
I love taking something 2D and crafting it into a 3D item. And as the transformation happens, you can literally see the animals come alive, each one of them growing into their own little character.

Describe your studio or workspace?
I am lucky enough to be one of the resident makers at the New Brewery Arts centre in the heart of Cirencester.  I love my studio! All activity is centered around a large “cutting table” in the middle, the surrounding walls are filled with the materials I work with including leather, vintage fabrics, jars of colourful beads, buttons and trimmings. Sewing machines are tucked into corners while reels of wool and sewing thread are dotted about. Scissors of all sizes and measuring tapes hang from wall hooks.
It may seem chaotic as every square inch of space is filled up but everything has it’s place and I love having all materials visible and easily accessible.

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
Sadly no. However as my studio is open to the public, I'll be trying to get a Christmas market vibe going on in my workspace!

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
I love the run up to Christmas, how decorations pop up and lights make dark evenings so much more endurable. I also love how the Christmas spirit can just sweep over to you from beautiful decorations, hearing a piece of music or having a lovely glass of mulled wine.

If you could choose a fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist to collaborate with who would it be and why?
I love Lizzie Pearce's animal brooches and I think by putting our magical animals together we could create something rather special.

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be?
Lizzie Pearce's Badger Brooch

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?
Workshop 22 opposite the Hospital is another wonderful place showcasing local talent and the Spanish cafe next door makes brilliant tortilla!

What are your plans for 2013?
I'm hoping to develop my leather animals more and even go a size larger!

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why?
I'd be a set of lovely Christmas fairy lights that would always work, year on year. No more trying to find that one culprit bulb that prevents the whole set from lighting up

Thank you Laura - your little Owl is such a cutie!
You can find Laura's gorgeous creatures in Paper Scissors Stone Volume 5 until the end of December.

Meet the Maker Interview - Lianna Sheppard / Ocular

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
I am Lianna and I am obsessed with shapes! - This love is what inspires me when designing and in creating my 'Ocular' Jewellery, that I make from laser cut acrylic in lots of lovely bright colours and Geometric forms!

What do you think makes Paper • Scissors • Stone special?
I think that it is great that independents have the opportunity to sell and that people can buy from independents in the heart of Cabot Circus / Bristol. It's ace.

What do you love most about working in your chosen discipline?
It's funny, as I kind of fell into jewellery after studying Fashion from college, but always making and having an interest in accessories. But I enjoy exploring what you can do with shapes and forms around the human form and exploring with scale.

Describe your studio or workspace?
I work from home so for now my studio is my bedroom! I have my desk/ work area with shelves full of books and boxes full of jewellery and findings - pretty much everything I need to design and make my pieces - minus the laser cutter - It's a dream to have my own one day!!

Are you involved in any Christmas Markets, if so what?
I am doing one on the first of December with Magpies and I - in the Spiegeltent on the Waterfront in Bristol which I am particularly excited about ! I am also doing one with Designers Makers at Spitalfields in London on the 15th, which should be a good un.

What is your favourite part of Christmas?
Mulled Wine and Cosy Jumpers!!!

If you could choose a fellow Paper Scissors Stone artist to collaborate with who would it be and why?

If you could choose one Christmas gift for yourself from Paper Scissors Stone, what would it be? I'm loving the Jewellery by Tovicorrie so some of that would be rather lovely!

Which is your favourite local independent shop or eatery in Bristol & why?

I hope to keep growing the ocular brand, as it will be it's 3rd year of existence and achieve more of my goals!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
Mmm probably if I had to pick "I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday" - Generally find them pretty annoying, but at the same time you can't help but sing along!

Finally if you were a Christmas cracker, what inside treat would you be and why? I have to some kind of optical illusion toy or puzzle in a very bright colour / colours- preferably purple - basically because that's what I'm all about!
