Meet the Maker - Nadia Addonizio (Pinz & Needlez)

Friday, September 06, 2013
We are delighted to have featured on the blog today the very lovely Nadia of Pinz & Needlez.  Nadia creates fabulous sewing kits.  Over to Nadia to tell us a little more about it...

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your work?
My name is Nadia Addonizio and I run a small company called Pinz & Needlez which specialises in the sale of lovely sewing-themed gifts. From sewing kits with all the haberdashery you need, to do-it-yourself craft kits. Pinz & Needlez was started in order to encourage more people to sew! We currently operate online, at markets and sell a few of our products in shops around Bristol.

Apart from creating things what else do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy doing many things! I love cooking whilst listening to some good jazz music, although I’m not so good at baking… I also like growing my own veggies; going for long walks when I can, cycle around the streets of lovely Bristol, reading a good book and meeting up with friends for a good chat (and plenty of herbal tea!). I also paint and dabble with other art techniques…but most of all I love spending time with my partner and my lovely black cat Kali in front of a good movie!

Where does your inspiration come from?
My Grandfather was a tailor and my Mum followed his steps… I mainly take inspiration from them!

Describe your studio or workspace?
I share my studio with my partner who’s also an Artist…but I got the best spot as my old desk overlooks the garden! I use this space to paint, sew and pack all the Pinz & Needlez items! It’s pretty small but ideal for me!

What is a typical work day for you?
I typically start my day early. The first thing I do is making myself a cup of green tea and put some music on followed by a nice, filling breakfast! I then catch up with emails and other social media stuff, after which I start either packing items ready for sale or I do bits of sewing. I always have few projects to work on and I am trying to follow a schedule but this doesn’t always work out the way I intended as I can get easily distracted by other things!

What do you love most about what you do?
Designing products like the kit jars and our Children Sewing Kits is pretty fun but the thing I love the most about Pinz & Needlez is doing the markets since I love meeting new people and seeing the response from them about what I do. I love listening to their stories and getting them excited about Pinz & Needlez!

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsman (dead or alive), who would it be?
This is a tricky question… so many to choose from! I guess I would say Tamara de Lempicka for her amazing and clear style and Dave McKean for his eclecticism as well as Mark Rothko, Paul Gauguin, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Alfons Mucha, Amedeo Modigliani, Jan Saudek, Marc Chagall and last but not least Guo Pei and the Cirque du Soleil makers!

Which local artist/maker do you most admire?

Tell us your current loves:
* Shop: African Oriental Craft, Milan, Italy
* Restaurant / Café: Rangoli Restaurant in Milan, the atmosphere and food are worth a visit there!
* Designer / maker / artist: Elsie Agnes Betty, her needle and crochet work are simply amazing!

If you were stranded in the wilds somewhere, what item would you need with you the most?
A pen and a diary to write down my thoughts and sketch ideas!

Thank you Nadia, your kits are a perfection introduction in to the art of needle work.  You can find Nadia's kits for sale in our Paper Scissors Stone SUMMER shop until the end of September.
